Over 130 years of tradition
These are the most important milestones in the company’s history:

Year Milestone
1873 Dr. Heinrich Byk sets up the company “Dr. Heinrich Byk AG” in Berlin
1907 Euphyllin, a drug that even today still plays an important role in the therapy of respiratory disorders, is patented and gains an international reputation.
1915 At the age of 70, Heinrich Byk hands over the business to Paul Gulden.
1941 Dr. Günther Quandt, a businessman, acquires a majority of the company’s shares.
1946 Byk Gulden Lomberg started again in Konstanz.
1957 Byk Gulden Lomberg introduces Riopan, still used today to treat stomach problems.
1976 Ebrantil – an effective product to reduce high blood pressure, is patented.
1979 Byk Gulden opens a new facility to produce active substances in Singen. Singen is now also home to the company’s logistics center.
1994 Pantoprazole is launched. It is used in about 100 countries to treat acid-related stomach and duodenal disorders and inflammation of the esophagus.
2002 The company’s name is changed to ALTANA Pharma AG. As part of a move towards greater internationalisation, Byk Gulden Lomberg takes on the name of the parent company and corporate holding company,
ALTANA AG.
2002 The ALTANA Research Institute (ARI) opens in Waltham near Boston.
2003 Two new research buildings open at the company’s headquarters in Konstanz.
2004 First approvals of Alvesco ®.

The ground-breaking ceremony for an ALTANA Pharma research institute is held in Mumbai, India.

Production of active ingredients starts in the new facility in block W32 in Singen, Germany.
2005 First Launches of Alvesco ®.
2006 New Institute of Preclinical Drug Safety in Barsbüttel, Germany, opens.

New production facility in Cork, Ireland, opens 
2007 ALTANA Pharma Pty Ltd becomes Nycomed Pty Ltd
